Ninety-One years ago, Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher created "Negro History Week." It took 50 long years before it turned into a month-long celebration. February was selected because the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln carried significance in the African-American community.

There will be several events this month to celebrate that significance and our journey. People will gather to reflect, honor, sing, eat, dance, showcase art and discuss current affairs. Many events will occur on the same day with similar themes. Some events will be popular with large crowds and some will have a few people scattered throughout the venue. In the end what matters most about all the gatherings is the content. Each person should walk away feeling impacted by the experience. Everyone in the room should feel a sense of connection. From the idea to the execution, the event planner to the security guard and the attendees to the speakers. The sense of unity should be compelling.

This is why LOTUSbaseline Alliance exists. For the love of events and bringing people together in an organized fashion. We want to increase diversity in our industry, we want to support the efforts of event planners, we want to honor their hard work. Inspired by Mr. Woodson, we understand that it may take a long time to break the chains and turn something small into something larger. We are in our infancy but we are determined to create an organization of event planners that work together. Managing the tasks of event planing alone goes against the purpose of events.

Last year, at an Oakstop art exhibit "Talk to Brother Malcolm", I was impacted by the visual pieces and content. I walked away being able to sum up the intent of LB Alliance with one statement made by Malcolm X. "When "i" is replaced with "we" even illness becomes wellness."

Together, WE can toughen urban sustainability, one event at a time! www.lotusbaseline.com
